Detentions

Students earn teacher or office detentions for a variety of reasons. If a student receives a detention he/she will receive a detention notice. This notice will have the date the detention is to be served, the name of the teacher or administrator who issued the detention, and the reason for the detention. The notice also has a section that allows the parent/guardian to indicate the form of transportation the student will use to return home. The notice is to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the teacher or administrator by the morning of the detention. This process allows for the parent to know what has happened during the day and to allow the school staff to know that the parent is informed and that transportation has been arranged.

SUSPENSIONS

Out-of-School suspension prohibits the student from participating in any planned school activities during the time of the suspension. Out-of-School suspension also prohibits the student from being on school property until the morning of the day of return from the suspension.

      Out-of-School Suspension

      When a child earns an Out-of-School suspension it is for a serious matter. This is the highest level of discipline administered by the Swift Middle School staff and is not handed out lightly. Students who repeat offenses that earn in-school suspensions will receive an out-of-school suspension. Based on the severity of the violation, a student may be suspended from one to ten days with the possibility of a review for expulsion with the Superintendent of Schools.

      Out-of-School suspension may be administered for, but is not limited to:

      • earning the limit of detentions,
      • name calling of another student,
      • continuous classroom disruptions,
      • numerous tardies to class or school,
      • cutting class or detention,
      • cheating, forgery or deliberate misrepresentation (students will also receive a "zero" on the academic work),
      • other offences as determined by the administration;

      • leaving the school building or school grounds without permission;
      • threatening or posing a threat of danger to the physical well being of the students or staff;
      • striking, punching or hitting any member of the school staff;
      • fighting, punching, hitting or inappropriate physical contact with another student;
      • stealing or attempting to steal personal property or money from another student or staff member;
      • extortion;
      • smoking or chewing tobacco at any time in any place within the school building or on school grounds;
      • possessing, selling, or using illegal drugs, narcotics or alcohol within the school building or school grounds (as per board policy);
      • possession of any kind of weapon within the school building or on the school grounds (as per board policy);
      • use of verbal or written, obscene, or profane language or gestures toward students or school staff;
      • willful disobedience of school rules;
