Mrs. Brown
Welcome to Mrs. Brown's Home Page
DECEMBER
This month the students are reading the novel," The Outsiders." They are enjoying this "coming of age" book, and I am using it to teach literature analysis. The students take notes on the characters, plot, setting, and theme from each chapter. In addition, the elements of foreshadowing, flashback, mood, tone, symbols, and point of view are taught.
Many CMT questions and activities are embedded in our study also. Students make predictions, relate their own experiences to the text, compare and contrast characters, settings, plots, and themes. They consider how the novel would be different if the narrator was a Soc instead of a Greaser, just to name a few of the skills taught.
The novel work should last about 2-3 weeks. After being tested on the book, students will have the opportunity to see the movie with your permission. A permission slip will be sent home prior to the movie being shown. The movie is excellent and extends the learning as we are able to compare the genres of novel and movie. This will challenge the students' thinking skills in a beneficial way.
May your holidays and winter vacation be wonderful.
