Adolescent Literacy - Grade 7

  The primary goal of the adolescent literacy class is to improve the reading skills of all students and to develop and encourage the growth of recreational reading as a lifelong habit.

Throughout the year the students will :

• -be exposed to various types of literature in their textbook The Language of Literature, READ Magazine, and other supplemental materials.
• -understand and apply active reading stategies
• -learn and use assigned vocabulary words in oral discussions and written work
• -participate in SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) every day from a book of their choice

What is SSR (Sustained Silent Reading)?

The students are required to bring an age-appropriate book with them to class every day.  Most days, class begins with ten minutes of SSR.  When a student finishes a book, they are asked to write a five-to-seven sentence summary on a separate sheet of paper and attach it to their daily SSR log sheet. The SSR log sheet is collected close to the end of each marking period.  Our goal is to read at least three books per SSR log sheet.

The daily SSR sheet and summaries count as a test grade.

Students should also be reading their book at home when there isn't any written reading homework.

Tips For Success

• -be on time for class
• -be seated with all necessary materials* ready when the bell rings
• -follow directions listed on the board
• -actively participate in class
• -raise your hand if you have a question or comment
• -use your agenda daily; it's one of the greatest tools to success
• - please ask for extra help, if necessary

*Materials needed each day: textbook, SSR book, binder, journal, pen and pencil
